Leucistic Bird: House Finch
Tuesday, February 21, 2012 at 09:37PM I had a somewhat rare treat on Monday as I wrapped up my watch during the Great Backyard Bird Count.
I was scanning the backyard for visitors and keeping count when I noticed a unique flash of blonde white land on one of the feeder stands. I almost fell out of my chair. I had to run and get the camera and wait for it to come back. It was a leucistic House Finch.
Leucisitic in birds basically means that the bird has a genetic condition that prevents it the ability to deposit pigment, primarily melanin, in their feathers. Creating varying degrees of washed out or bleached lookiing feathers. Sometimes covering the whole bird, like in this case. If it was an albino bird, the feathers, skin, eyes, and everything would be affected.

I hope this great bird spends more time with me in the future!

Oh my gosh, that last photo is stunning! Look at the little bird's expression. I think he would speak if he had words.
Great photos and a great spotting! That last one is particularly nice.
This word verification is killing me. Attempt #5. After this I give up.
As a fairly new birder (my wife is really into it) i was amazed at the color of a house finch. This is incredible!
